Strokes versus the field

also: vs field · strokes gained vs field · SG total

How many strokes better than the field's average a round was, on the same course on the same day.

Formula
vs_field = field average (same tournament, round and course) - player's score

A 68 at a soft course in calm weather and a 68 in a U.S. Open wind are different rounds. Setting each round against the average of everyone who played the same course that day takes the course and the conditions out, and leaves how well the player played.

It is the same idea as total strokes gained, measured from scores rather than from every shot: positive is better than the field, negative worse. BirdieAPI computes it for every full round with a field of at least ten.

The common mistake

A weak field flatters it. Beating an opposite-field event by three is not beating a major field by three; use the field-strength adjusted number to compare across events.
