Score to par

also: birdie · bogey · eagle · par

Strokes taken against the par of a hole or a round: a birdie is one under, a bogey one over.

Each hole has a par, the strokes an expert is expected to need: 3, 4 or 5. One under is a birdie, two under an eagle, one over a bogey, two over a double bogey.

BirdieAPI reads par per hole from the tournament's course setup and from each score's name in the feed, so a round's score to par is counted from its holes where they are recorded.

The common mistake

Par changes: a course can play a hole as a par 5 one year and a par 4 the next. Compare holes within a tournament's setup, not across years by number alone.
