Greens in regulation

also: GIR

The share of holes where the ball reached the green with at least two putts left for par.

Formula
GIR % = greens hit in regulation / holes played x 100

A green is hit in regulation on a par 3 in one shot, a par 4 in two and a par 5 in three. It is the classic measure of ball striking, paired with putts per green hit for putting.

BirdieAPI serves ESPN's tournament stat line, which carries greens in regulation for PGA Tour events from 2011.

The common mistake

It ignores how close the ball finished. Two players can hit the same share of greens and leave very different putts.
